Death by a Thousand Small Inconsistencies: Part 1
Consistency is not a Straitjacket

Brands are felt in the gut. Long before people analyse your messaging or offering, they have an instinctive reaction. If your brand feels right, people trust it.
Consistency is often misunderstood. Many businesses treat it like a rigid rulebook and set of restrictions. In reality, strong brands behave more like people. Their personality remains recognisable even as they evolve.
Think about Coca-Cola. Its visual language has evolved over time, from the Spencerian script to the wave device and colour systems across its range. Yet you instantly recognise it. You know what it stands for because the core identity hasn’t changed. That’s what consistency looks like.
Consistency isn’t about being jailed by seriousness, but about keeping alive the soul that makes a brand recognisable.
At its core, consistency is innate. It comes from the inside and resonates outward. A brand, like a person, can express itself in many ways: serious or playful, bold or understated, yet with an underlying personality that remains intact.
This is why strong brands feel effortless: their decisions flow from a clear sense of who they are.
Where brands struggle to follow through
Imagine a new relationship. There’s an initial spark that kickstarts the connection. But chemistry alone doesn’t sustain it. What keeps the relationship alive is consistency. Without it, even the strongest spark eventually fades.
Brands are no different. Most begin with a clear vision of who they are and what they want to bring to the world. But vision isn’t sustained by brand guidelines alone. It’s reinforced through hundreds of small decisions across an organisation every day.
Over time, that’s where things begin to shift. Teams expand. New decision-makers enter the room. The visionaries who originally defined the brand’s personality are no longer involved in the daily details. Execution dilutes vision. When that happens, something else changes: the story people tell about your brand.
What people say about you is the new brand equity.
Long before anyone meets you, they already have a sense of what you represent. Every department, platform and customer interaction either strengthens that perception or chips away at it.
With inconsistency, the effects rarely appear overnight. Over time, the commercial impact can become harder to ignore:
  • Reduced trust
  • Decreased customer loyalty
  • Slower conversions
  • Internal inefficiencies
What often looks like a market problem is simply brand inconsistency revealing itself. If consistency sits at the heart of a brand, the real challenge is carrying it through every decision, every interaction and every experience people have with you.
In the next part of this series, we’ll look at how strong brands manage to do exactly that, and why consistency can’t be left to chance.
