The Maslow is Sun International’s specialist business hotel, strategically located in both Sandton, Johannesburg and Menlyn Maine, Pretoria, two of South Africa’s leading commercial precincts. Purpose-built for the modern professional, The Maslow is a destination defined by intelligent service, cutting-edge technology, and a philosophy rooted in personal and professional elevation.
With the expansion into Menlyn Maine, Circle was tasked with extending and refining The Maslow brand, creating a visual and verbal language that could scale across locations while deepening connection to the brand’s unique conceptual foundation.
A Brand Built on Purpose
The Maslow’s brand ethos draws directly from Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, a framework that moves from foundational necessities to the pursuit of self-actualisation. The hotel is designed to meet every requirement of the travelling professional, providing an ecosystem where business thrives and ambition is rewarded.
Circle repositioned The Maslow as the foremost destination for professionals. A place where everything from room categories to meeting spaces supports elevated performance.
Naming the Experience: Foundation. Median. Zenith.
Inspired by The Maslow’s iconic triangle logo, Circle introduced a naming system for room tiers that reflected progression, growth, and aspiration:
- Foundation – functional, efficient, and focused
- Median – balanced, equipped, and elevated
- Zenith – refined, luxurious, and aspirational
These names reframe room categories through a conceptual lens, turning a standard hotel hierarchy into a narrative of advancement.
A Visual Language of Structure and Smartness
The Maslow’s design system was inspired by the order, geometry, and rhythm of corporate environments. Circle developed:
- Patterns and grid structures influenced by architectural cues within the hotels
- A refined colour palette and typography system tailored for premium business hospitality
- A tone of voice that is smart, succinct, and witty, reflecting the intelligence of its guests while keeping the brand personable
The result is a visual and verbal identity that is both disciplined and expressive, perfectly calibrated for the business traveller.
From Strategy to Experience
Circle extended The Maslow brand system through:
- Naming of meeting rooms and event spaces
- Wayfinding and environmental signage
- Guest collateral such as menus, directories, and in-room materials
- Branded amenities and ‘smile-in-the-mind’ touchpoints, including witty giveaways like custom Rubik’s cubes and business-class ties, all presented with a Maslow twist
These touchpoints form a cohesive, intelligent guest experience of one that’s as memorable as it is functional.
