As part of Sun International’s ambitious strategy to take ownership of its food and beverage ecosystem, Circle was commissioned to develop the brand identity for a dynamic new fast-food concept at Time Square in Menlyn Maine, Pretoria. The brief was clear: create a bold, unforgettable brand that could cut through the noise of a high-traffic entertainment precinct.
Conceptual Foundation: A Culinary Clash of Cultures
The result was Kung Fu Cowboy, a fast food brand born from the theatrical tension and shared symbolism between the Wild West and the Far East. Inspired by cinematic rivalries and iconic poster design, Kung Fu Cowboy delivers a unique dining experience that playfully stages the East vs. West showdown on a plate.
From dumplings to burgers, every menu item is part of the culinary standoff.
Design Narrative: When Samurai Meets Gunslinger
The visual identity borrows from classic Kung Fu and Western film posters, fusing dramatic typography with bold silhouettes. Central to the brandmark is the Sun, a universal symbol present in both cultures, anchoring the East-West dialogue in a shared icon.
The typography cleverly layers meaning: “Kung Fu” stands tall and proud, while “Cowboy” appears as its shadow, subtly nodding to the duality and mutual influence between the two worlds. This interplay creates a sense of cinematic drama and instant memorability.
Brand Language: Where East Eats West
The tone of voice embraces cheeky provocation and cultural mashup. Messaging plays off the showdown dynamic, where sword-swinging samurais face off with gun-slinging outlaws in a culinary crossfire.
Every brand touchpoint, from packaging to signage to uniforms, brings this battle to life with wit, energy and unmistakable attitude.
